Dr Massimiliano Fanni Canelles

 

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Massimiliano Fanni Canelles was born in Trieste, on August 22nd 1965. Officer of Fanteria Alpina and journalist; graduate in Medicine and Surgery and specialized in Internal Medicine and then in Nephrology; manager of the Operative Unit of Nephrology at the Local Health Authority no. 4 Medio Friuli. Professor at the I level master ‘Assistance relationship in national and international contexts of vulnerability and poverty’ at the Catholic University of Milan. President of the Italian Committee Myelin Project, which supports research on rare and demyelinating diseases. Director of SocialNews, a monthly magazine, supported by RAI Social Action Department, awarded by the Euro-Mediterranean-Confindustria Prize as Best European publishing. National President of @uxilia Onlus, a non-profit organization for the protection of the weaker; member of the National Volunteer Observatory.

In 2005, he was awarded the Lombard Seal in Cividale del Friuli for humanitarian merits. In 2007, he was awarded, the National Knights of Italy Union, Friuli Award for high social value and in 2009, Moret d'Aur Price for social merits. In 2012, he was awarded the Ducal Prize for humanitarian merits. In February 2004, he met in a papal hearing His Holiness Pope John Paul II; In March 2008, in Friuli Venezia Giulia region, he interviewed His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

 

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Managerial competences, decision-making and communication skills, great capacity of problem solving. Identification of qualities and management of poor performances, capacities of motivation and ability of financial management, as specified below:

From 2007 to date, National President of the Italian Committee Myelin Project (CIPM – www.progettomielina.it), the Italian branch of the U.S. Myelin Project, aimed at supporting research for therapy in demyelinating diseases. He was engaged by the Ambassador, Mr. M. Alessi, to restore the economic situation and manage the organizational deficits. Today CIPM has an active financial statement. Since 2011, CIPM is partner of Telethon Foundation, in financing the research project ‘GPP1007, Modulation of neuregulin for the treatment of demyelinating neuropathies’, at the Institute of San Raffaele in Milan.

Founder and National President of @uxilia Onlus (www.auxiliaitalia.it), a no profit organization recognized with Legal Status by the Italian Government. @uxilia Onlus has signed agreements with the Department of Youth Justice of the Ministry of Justice and the Department of Civil Rights and Immigration of the Ministry of the Interior. It has also agreements with the Court of Udine and the Universities of Trieste, Bologna, Padua. It implements local and national projects on Doping, Eating Disorders and Addictions; it organizes monthly meetings and cultural events; it is also the publisher of magazines and books in partnership with Rai-Eri Publisher; it has steady relations and collaboration with schools, prisons, children’s homes, sports’agencies, media, fashion and theaters.

He founded and directs the humanitarian section of @uxiliachildren (www.auxiliachildren.org), active in International Cooperation in Developing Countries suffering wars, poverty, hungry and natural disasters such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Palestine. With the construction of schools, orphanages, health centers and educational activities, health care and long distance adoption, he follows up children in various contexts of distress ensuring them health and education. In particular, he is involved in the recovery of ex child soldiers and children victim of war and crime.



Since 2004, founder and director of the social, political, cultural and health monthly magazine SocialNews (www.socialnews.it). The magazine is registered at the Court of Trieste and sponsored by RAI Social Action Department; winner of the 2008 Confidustria/Euromediterrean Price as the best experience in the field of publishing in Europe. SocialNews has a journalistic laboratory at the University of Bologna and an agreement for workshops with the students of the University of Padua. The magazine has a free distribution in thousands copies and is sent by RAI Social Action Department to its mailing list.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND MEDICAL – SCIENTIFIC COMPETENCES

Since February 2002, he is Medical Manager at an Operative Unit of Nephrology and Dialysis at the Local Health Authority no. 4 Medio Friuli at the Hospital of Cividale del Friuli.

He is President of the Italian Committee Myelin Project - branch of the U.S. foundation aimed at finding treatments for rare and neurological demyelinating diseases - based at ‘Bambino Gesù’ Hospital in Rome.

On November 9, 2001, he specialized in Internal Medicine at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Trieste, defending the thesis on "The new perspectives of combined treatment of inoperable or recurring carcinoma of the pancreas", achieving a score of 50/50 cum laude.

On November 15, 2006, he specialized in Nephrology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine, University of Trieste, defending the thesis entitled "Vascular accesses, central venous catheters", achieving a score of 50/50 cum laude.

In May 1996, he was certified in the profession of Surgeon at the University of Trieste. Since June 6, 1996, he was admitted to the Order of Surgeons of the province of Trieste, registration no. 3343.

On March 27, 1996, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery cum laude, at the University of Trieste, defending, with Professor L. Campanacci, the thesis entitled "Epidemiological investigation on infection of hepatitis C virus: prevalence in the North-East of Italy population of a new viral genotype".

Since September 1994, he is journalist. He is registered at the Order of Journalist of Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.

 

AWARDS

In May 2012 he was awarded the prize Ducal Night for humanitarian merits to help ex child soldiers in Sri Lanka.

In September 2009, at the 32th Edition of the prestigious Moret D'Aur Prize, has was awarded having acted "without frontiers" in the worst areas of the world.

In October 2008, he was awarded, by Confindustria/Euromediterranean Prize 2008, as editor of the monthly SocialNews, best publishing experience at European level. Confindustria/Euromediterranean Prize is one of the most prestigious awards in the field of communication and media.

In May 2007, he was awarded by UNCI (National Knights of Italy Union) the Friuli prize, awarded to personalities of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, who have distinguished themselves in the World, in scientific, cultural, social, sport, economic and business environments.

In March 2005, he was awarded the Lombard Seal, by the mayor of Cividale del Friuli for social merits in Italy and worldwide.

 

RESEARCH AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarship by the section of AIRH of Trieste for the study project "Evaluation of telomerase activity in oncohaematological diseases" (June 2000).

Award launched by A.M.T. for the work "Effectiveness of the association interferon-ribavirin in patients with hepatitis C relapsed or not responding to previous antiviral treatment' (October 1999).

Award launched by A.M.T. for the work "Survey on the prevalence of 51p1 gene in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and relationships with autoimmune hemolytic anemia" (October 1997).

Award launched by A.M.T. for the work "The lymphoid cells of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia producing immunoglobulins (IgM) pander to isotype switching without acquiring somatic mutations" (October 1996).

 

CONFERENCE ACTIVITIES

Since 2005, he has been involved as speaker and/or moderator to 74 national conferences and seminars. In particular, he has been invited as speaker in 26 conferences about sanitary and scientific issues and 32 about social issues. He has been also involved as moderator into 16 national conferences. He has organized 24 socio-sanitary conferences and 16 cultural events.
